COLORADO SPRINGS -

As we wrap up our stories for World Breastfeeding Week, we're sharing the story of a Colorado Springs couple who learned first-hand about the benefits their sons received from having donor breast milk available to them when twin sons Logan and Liam Schumaker arrived six weeks early, at UCHealth Memorial.

Dad Joshua Schumaker says, “We had no idea that hospitals can do this.  We learned about it when my wife was admitted to the hospital, and was actually going to have our kids.  We had a nurse come in and explain everything to us, and we thought it was great option."

Marcie was looking forward to breastfeeding her sons, but knew their early arrival would present a problem in that department in the first few days.  “For me it was really nerve-racking from the beginning worrying about my milk coming in.  Having premature babies I knew it would take me a little bit longer (for my milk to come in) than mothers who carry full term.  I didn't get my milk for about five days and then it was such a small supply at first, that with having twins I knew it wouldn't be enough."

Josh and Marcie were presented with two options to feed Logan and Liam, says Josh: “Instead of just having the option of only formula, we also had the option of donor breast milk.  Human milk from a donor, was definitely a better option in our opinion.”

Using donor milk not only instantly gave Liam and Logan much needed nutrition, it also allowed Marcie to rest up and get on track quicker. Marcie says, “Having the donor milk really helped out because it made me feel able to rest so I wasn't so worried about pumping.  The rest my body got helped me get more milk.  We were doing skin to skin with the boys, and I had more energy to be at the hospital more often to help them which also helped my milk come in right away.  After about 5 or 6 days I started to get enough of my own milk for them.”

Joshua and Marcie say they are so grateful to every mom who donated breast milk, making it possible for their early arrivals to have human breast milk from day one.  Logan and Liam are nearly a year old now, and are doing just fine while keeping Marcie and Joshua very busy trying to keep up with them.
