Rockies overcome Freeland injury to beat Phillies 4-3

Posted: Updated:
DENVER (AP) -

The Rockies overcame an injury to starter Kyle Freeland in the 1st inning to beat the Phillies 4-3 on Friday night as Nolan Arenado homered to tie the game in the seventh inning and D.J. LeMahieu hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth.

Freeland, whose 11 wins this season leads major league rookies, was forced to exit three batters into his start because of an apparent left leg injury. He appeared to tweak the leg after delivering a pitch to Aaron Altherr. Manager Bud Black and team trainers came out to check Freeland and made the decision to pull him after he threw several warmup pitches.

There was no immediate word from the Rockies on the nature of the injury to Freeland.

Chris Rusin was the first of five relievers used by the Rockies to finish the game. Mike Dunn (4-1) pitched 1 1-3 innings of scoreless relief for the victory and Greg Holland got three outs for his 34th save.

With the score tied at 3-all, Pat Valaika started the eighth by drawing a walk off Luis Garcia (1-3). Garcia retired the next two batters and Charlie Blackmon was then walked intentionally before LeMahieu drove a single to right-center field to score Valaika with the winning run.
