COLORADO SPRINGS -

Dr. Michael Barber heads up the new International Health and Wellness Center (IHWC) and Spa that is part of the Garden of the Gods Collection.  Dr. Barber is a Cardiologist and Internal Medicine doctor who hopes the new IHWC will make Colorado Springs a health and wellness destination again.

“Medical tourism is growing in leaps and bounds.  We have a bit of a grandiose vision if you look at what the west was originally, especially Colorado Springs.  This area was well know for the tuberculosis sanatoriums for people with chronic lung disease because of the dry climate.  This was a wellness destination and that's our our goal again is to propagate that type of mentality not only within the community, but within the region, the state and maybe even hopefully internationally."

The center has already had a couple of clients from other countries and is open to the public.  It’s focus is on people who want to take control of their health before they begin to suffer medical problems says Dr. Barber.

“The vision being that we want to be there for people that are searching or for people that maybe have failed in the common pathway of traditional medicine. We provide an integrative approach a complementary approach that is much different than what most people are used to seeing.”

Dr. Barber heads up a diverse group of board certified physicians and specialists that includes chiropractors, dieticians and more all working together.

“With a lot of wellness doctors, you go to an internal medicine doctor you get your internal medicine. When you see a chiropractor you get your chiropractic, but there's not really an integration or a free flow of information a free flow of care between them.  The objective here is there are no boundaries.  Upstairs the spa is totally medically oriented.  Rebecca Johnston is a certified oncology esthetician who works predominantly with breast cancer patients.”

Doctor Barber says trends these days point to people being more proactive about their health as they age.

“You hear more people saying ‘twenty years from now, will I be the guy that will need to have my wife push me around the cruise ship in a wheelchair?’.  It’s all about people being able to get out and hike, or walk, or bike, or fish, basically whatever it is you like to do.  This area is just so optimal for outdoor activity.  The loop in the Garden to Gods is a phenomenal biking and running loop.  This this whole town, this whole area is ripe for wellness and for health.

Right now the center has been utilized mostly by club members and resort guests, but Dr. Barber feels the demand will grow for their services as the word gets out.

“I think once the word gets out the you have this place in this community, you have this beautiful environment, you have these spiritual and life changing surroundings, you put on top of that a spa, a resort, and a wellness center, that are all integrated in a unified theme, you have a very powerful unified wellness partner."
