NBC NEWS -

Doctors in England said they recovered 27 contact lenses from a woman's eye in November during preparations for Cataract surgery

They were found clumped together with mucus under her top right eyelid.

The 67-year-old woman had worn monthly contacts for 35 years, but she rarely visited the eye doctor. Doctors said they do not know how long each of the lenses were there.

The woman said she thought she had lost her contacts when they went missing and thought the discomfort was due to dry eyes and old age.

The surgery was postponed due to the build up of bacteria from the contacts.

Experts say it's very rare, but serves as a good reminder to get regular checkups, especially for contact wearers.
