Northern Lights On Display Tonight

Posted: Updated:

I know the Game of Thrones premiere is tonight, but if that HBO show isn't quite your thing, Mother Nature will be putting on her own tonight! A solar storm will be hitting the earth tonight in such a way that the Northern Light will be visible for more of the United States than usual.

Lets start with the basics: what are the Northern Lights? Well the Northern Lights, scientifically known as the Aurora Borealis in our area, are simply the phenomenon of a solar storm interacting with earth. Solar winds coming from the sun will occasionally smash into Earth's magnetic field. Particles in the solar winds with interact with Earth's magnetic field which results in stunning colors generally in the polar region of Earth. The storm affecting Earth tonight will be much larger than usual and will swing some of the Northern Lights down into the United States.

Can Colorado see the lights tonight? Nope, bad news there, Colorado is too far south to see any of the Northern Lights. The good news? You don't have to drive too far away to get a pretty decent show! The lights should be visible in Wyoming tonight as long as you can get away from light pollution (lights from a town or city that block out light from stars or the Northern Lights). The more north you drive the better view of the lights you will get, especially with a camera that allows in a lot of light.

A shortage in construction workers is being felt across the nation and it's hit Colorado Springs hard. While it's no secret the demand is high for housing across the city right now and it's been growing for decades.
