DENVER (AP) - Authorities say a Colorado State Patrol trooper and an Arapahoe County sheriff's deputy are seriously hurt after their vehicles collided head-on while responding to a road rage report east of Denver.

KUSA-TV (http://on9news.tv/2snQsCI) reports that despite serious injuries, the trooper was able to talk with responders after the crash near Watkins Saturday evening. The sheriff's office said the deputy is in serious but stable condition. Police say they did not know why the vehicles were traveling in opposite directions while answering the same call.

KUSA reported Aurora police said the officers were checking a report of a road rage incident involving a handgun in Bennett.

Police said the trooper was airlifted to a hospital after responders cut him out of the wreckage. The deputy was taken to a hospital by ambulance.
