Essential wildfire training: CSFD recruits take classroom outside

Posted: Updated:

"There's classroom training and that's one thing, but there's field which is a completely different thing," said Colorado Springs Firefighter and Instructor, Paul Guivens.

Colorado Springs Firefighters left the classroom behind for two days of intense wildfire training outside the city in rugged mountain terrain on the edge of Rosemont Reservoir.

It's a major exercise over two days, with Colorado Springs Fire Department recruits learning alongside the wildfire team from Colorado Springs Utilities and soldiers from Fort Carson.

“Wildfires are never fought by a single agency. They’re always fought in collaboration with other jurisdictions and other agencies,” said Jeff Neal with Colorado Springs Utilities.

This training is essential in Colorado where wildfires are common. Everything about it is as real as possible with one major exception, no flames.
