What to do this Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend is approaching, and there are events and activities planned from Saturday May 27th to Monday May 29th all across southern Colorado. Here are some events that will run all three days in the community:

  • Territory Days in Old Colorado City
    Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free to the public.
  • Create Cañon City Balloon Classic at The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey
    Launches: Saturday, Sunday and Monday 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. Balloon Glows: Saturday and Sunday 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. with events throughout the day. Free admission and parking.
  • Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Plant Sale
    Saturday through Monday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free to the public.
  • MeadowGrass Music Festival at LaForest Conference & Retreat Center in Black Forest 
    Saturday through Monday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets required.

Territory Days is one of the largest and most popular events in the Colorado Springs area. This is the 42nd year the event will be held in Old Colorado City. Streets will shut down to traffic and be replaced with vendors, live music, food, and crafts. Stores will be open during the event. 

Parking is free along side streets, and there is also a free shuttle that runs every 15 minutes from Coronado High School. In observance of Memorial Day, at 3:00 p.m. on Monday May 29th there will be a special remembrance ceremony held in Bancroft Park. Visit the event's website for more information and a schedule of events. 

The Create Cañon City Balloon Classic is also happening over the three-day weekend and all events are weather permitting. Full schedule and details on their website.

The MeadowGrass Music Festival has been growing in popularity over the past nine years and combines national and local musical acts that are family friendly. This year, organizers put the entire festival program online

Monday Memorial Day events:

  • Pikes Peak Veterans Council - 11:00 a.m. at 6880 Palmer Park Blvd.
  • Monument Memorial - 10:00 a.m. at the Monument Cemetery, 800 Eighth St. 
  • Pueblo Veterans Council - 11:00 a.m. Pueblo Riverwalk
  • Evergreen Cemetery - 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.-- 1005 Hancock Expressway 

There will be heightened DUI enforcement throughout the weekend as well as the Click it or Ticket campaign.

    Denver Public Schools Superintendent Tom Boasberg announced late Friday that East High principal Andy Mendelsberg will retire following 26 years with the district, while athletic director Lisa Porter has also resigned.
