Greeley police say they know who murdered girl 7 years ago

Posted: Updated:

Greeley Police Chief Jerry Garner says officers believe they know who murdered a 12-year-old girl in 2010. Speaking in an interview with the Greeley Tribune Garner said the department doesn't have any doubts, but must make sure they have all of the evidence needed to meet the standard of proof.

12-year-old Kayleah Wilson had been on her way to meet a friend at a mall when she vanished. Despite law enforcement road blocks and support from the FBI and national child search agencies she remained missing for nearly two months. Her body was found in an irrigation ditch.

Shortly after her body was found, her then 18-year-old boyfriend was arrested for sexual assault. Robert Montoya was convicted the next year and served three years in prison before winning an appeal and the charge was dismissed.
