Trial delayed for former Sheriff Maketa

Posted: Updated:

An El Paso County judge has granted a request to delay the trial of former Sheriff Terry Maketa until late June.

The request from prosecutors came just two weeks before his trial was scheduled to start. The motion was filed due to an attorney's recent resignation.

Maketa's defense argued the delay would violate their client's right to a speedy trial. Maketa is facing multiple felony kidnapping and extortion charges related to the alleged arrest of a domestic abuse victim who claims authorities convinced her to change her story to protect a deputy.

The former sheriff was indicted along with former Undersheriff Paula Presley and Deputy John San Agustin.

Pressley and San Augustin pleaded not guilty to several charges, including extortion and kidnapping, earlier this month. Presley will stand trial in October. San Augustin's trial is set for November.
