Air Force homers past Charleston Southern 7-6

Air Force baseball (26-25) defeated Charleston Southern (21-28), 7-6, in non-conference action Thursday night at CSU Ballpark in Charleston, SC.  Five of the Falcons’ runs came via home run, including the go-ahead home run in the seventh by senior Russell Williams.

Tied at 6-6, Williams launched a solo shot in the seventh.  Reliever Ryan Holloway (3-1) tossed 3.1 shutout innings to close out the game and pick up the win.

Air Force, which leads the nation in hitting and doubles, had 16 hits and four doubles on the day.  The four doubles gave the Falcons 151 on the season, tying a school record with the 1988 team.  

Tyler Jones went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs.  Jones drove in the first run of the game in the third and hit a two-run homer in the fifth.  Daniel Jones, Tyler’s brother, added two hits, including a two-run homer to highlight a three-run sixth.  Williams went 3-for-5 on the day.  Nic Ready and Drew Wiss added two hits each.

Falcon starting pitcher Jacob DeVries pitched 5.2 innings, striking out one.

Charleston Southern had eight hits.  Designated hitter Aaron Miller homered for the Buccaneers.  Reliever Ryan Stoudemire (3-2) took the loss.  Starter Tyler Weekley pitched 5.1 innings, allowing six runs.

The Falcons built to the 3-0 lead on Tyler Jones’ RBIs.  Charleston Southern scored two in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 3-2 game.  Air Force went up 6-2 with three runs in the top of the sixth.  The Buccaneers tied the game up with four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Williams then gave the Falcons the game-winning run with the long-ball in the seventh.

“We got some clutch home runs from the Jones brothers and Russell Williams,” Air Force head coach Mike Kazlausky.  “Ryan Holloway then held the lead for us with some stellar relief pitching.  We’re looking to finish the regular season strong and today was a good first step.”

Game two of the three-game series is tomorrow.  First pitch is 6 pm ET.

    The death of Tim Watkins has turned into a homicide investigation. "It's a small town, you feel safe in a town like this, that's why people move here," David Tenace, a neighbor said.
