Elderly man found dead at Bear Creek Park

Posted: Updated:

An elderly man was found dead after an apparent fall at Bear Creek Park Wednesday night.

The man went missing during a hike Wednesday morning, when he went one direction and the rest of the group went another. After hours of searching for him, they made a tragic discovery -- the 87-year-old man had fallen and died.

Family members tell News 5 that Elmer Kutila hiked this stretch of Bear Creek Park near turnaround #4 on Gold Camp Road almost every day, and often helped pick up trash that was left behind by other people.

But this morning, when he didn't meet back up with his family like usual, they say they knew something wasn't right and they started the search. Elmer wasn't found until later when a hiker passing by says the man's dog, who is deaf, led him to Elmer's body.

"We were walking on the side of the road and I saw the dog and it looked pretty old... I went up to it and I petted it and it walked away. Kept waking away every time, and next thing you know, I looked up and there was a guy there," hiker Kyle Smith said.

Investigators are still on scene and awaiting for the Coroner to arrive. At this point, Elmer's death appears to be a tragic accident.
