Construction closures now, delays for summer season on W. Colorado Ave.

Posted: Updated:
EL PASO COUNTY -

Work happening on Colorado Springs' west side in the area once known as "no man's land" has moved from the sides of the roads to right in the middle of W. Colorado Avenue.

On Wednesday there was a total closure just east of the Beckers Lane intersection. The closure is happening now on purpose.

"Our target is to get the road buttoned up before the Memorial Day weekend,” said El Paso County, Project Manager Dennis Barron, “Get the trenches all filled in, get an interim pavement put on them, striped for the Memorial Day weekend."

The location is a major connection point between Manitou Springs, Old Colorado City, and Garden of the Gods -- all major tourist spots. It is important for traffic movement in the area through the summer.

Summer season is important to businesses along the corridor, but the heat of summer is also important to construction crews.

"We can't not do construction during the summer,” Barron said. “We'll just try to be as sensitive as possible."

Traffic will be flowing only with lanes changes and some delays depending on the work.

A shortage in construction workers is being felt across the nation and it's hit Colorado Springs hard. While it's no secret the demand is high for housing across the city right now and it's been growing for decades.
