Switchbacks fall 3-1 to Vancouver

Posted: Updated:

The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC fell 1-3 to Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 despite more-than-tripling Vancouver's shot count at 22-7.

The Switchbacks nearly struck in the first minute, as Shane Malcolm made a run down the middle but his shot went inches wide of the post. The Switchbacks controlled the early portions of the match but weren't able to capitalize on their opportunity. Vancouver took the lead in the 23rd minute as a Josh Suggs foul in the box led to a penalty kick, which Marco Bustos converted. The match would turn into a track meet, as both teams looked to make quick attacking runs. Neither side would be able to capitalize on their runs and eventually the second half would slow down. The Switchbacks would head into halftime down 1-0 despite out-shooting Vancouver 15-2.

The Switchbacks continued to control the ball in the attacking third, with numerous opportunities but all of their trips came up empty. Vancouver would get their fair share of chances as well and would double their lead in the 68th minute as they broke down the far side and finished from six yards out to take a 2-0 lead over the Switchbacks. Vancouver would then take over the game as they controlled possession and made the best of their opportunities in their attacking third. It would be Chris Serban who would give Vancouver the 3-0 lead in the 82nd minute placing the ball into the top right corner. The Switchbacks would get one back in the 88th minute as Shane Malcolm found Sean McFarlane who got his first of the season to cut the Vancouver lead to 1-3. The Switchbacks wouldn't find the net in stoppage time and would fall 1-3 to Vancouver.

The Switchbacks will head home to face FC Tuscon (PDL) in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Weidner Field on Wednesday, May 17th. Kickoff is at 7:00 P.M and tickets are available here.

The Switchbacks will then travel to Salt Lake City to face Rocky Mountain Rivals Real Monarchs on Saturday, May 20th as they return to USL action.

The Switchbacks will return home on Saturday, May 27th for a re-match against Reno 1868 FC.
