PUEBLO -

Work started Tuesday on what will be southern Colorado's first ever smart hive.

There are major concerns worldwide over shrinking bee populations as the little guys are essential to plant health and pollination.

The smart hive effort at the Pueblo Zoo will help bees and educate everyone about their importance in nature. Smart hives track the environmental conditions of the hive to assist beekeepers in making sure everything is running smoothly.

An official ribbon cutting for the completed hive and a new pollination garden takes place Saturday, which is Earth Day.

A shortage in construction workers is being felt across the nation and it's hit Colorado Springs hard. While it's no secret the demand is high for housing across the city right now and it's been growing for decades.
