Fort Collins Police Chief announces resignation

Posted: Updated:

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - The police chief of Fort Collins, Colorado is stepping down over a week after an officer was seen on video throwing a woman face-first to the ground before she was arrested.

Chief John Hutto and the city announced on Tuesday that he would resign May 12 after five years in the job. A joint written statement didn't say why he was leaving but in an online video Hutto said it was time to make a change for the future, noting that the department had faced some "significant challenges" in the last 1 ½ years.

The Coloradoan newspaper reports that the city recently paid a $425,000 settlement after two Hispanic officers sued the department for alleged racial discrimination. It also paid a settlement in an excessive force case earlier this year.
