Suspects break into Monument homes, steal 2 SUVs

Monument -

A juvenile is facing charges of auto theft, for starters, following a series of break-ins and a police chase early Tuesday morning in Monument.

El Paso County Sheriff's Office deputies were the first called out around 4:00 a.m. for multiple burglaries where the suspects got into cars and used garage door openers to get inside homes.

One homeowner in Woodmoor Acres Drive told Monument Police officers someone stole a Chevy Traverse and a Jeep Compass.

Officers and deputies caught up with the suspects stopped at a red light on North Gate Boulevard. In a rush to avoid officers, the suspects crashed into each other, then took off.

The Jeep went south on I-25 at a high rate of speed, causing officers to cancel a pursuit due to safety concerns.

The driver of the Chevy went towards Air Force Academy property before turning onto the Santa Fe Trail and crashing.  A search by Air Force Security Forces found no sign of the suspect.

Hours later the juvenile was found and arrested at a different location.

Investigators still need to find the other driver and the black 2016 Jeep Compass with Colorado license plate WOQ-409.

If you have any information, call the El Paso County Sheriff's Office at 719-390-5555.

A shortage in construction workers is being felt across the nation and it's hit Colorado Springs hard. While it's no secret the demand is high for housing across the city right now and it's been growing for decades.
