Supreme Court blocks Arkansas execution

(NBC News) The U.S. Supreme Court has blocked the state of Arkansas' request to carry out the first of eight death sentences before the end of the month.

The brief ruling leaves the state supreme court's stay in effect, sparing Don Davis' life for the time being.

Davis was the first of eight inmates scheduled to be executed over 10 days.

The legal team representing the inmates argues the state's rapid execution schedule increases the likelihood the procedures will be botched, and that the drugs used amount to cruel and unusual punishment.

Arkansas' supply of one of those drugs, Midazolam, expires at the end of the month.
