Deadline to file taxes is today

Posted: Updated:

Today is the deadline to file your state and federal taxes, and it is also the deadline to request an extension.

Although an extension gives you more time to file, it doesn't give you more time pay, as at least 90-percent of taxes you owe are due when you file for an extension. You will also need to file for a separate extension with the state.

You can request an extension, estimate how much you owe and pay taxes at IRS.gov.

If you don't meet today's deadline the IRS can charge you late fees and penalties, even if you are owed a refund.
