COLORADO SPRINGS -

UC Health Memorial hosted training for Blackhawk helicopter pilots practicing airlift medical emergencies Monday.

The hospital has an ongoing agreement with Fort Carson to allow pilots to practice rescue missions. UC Health Memorial is the only hospital that has a helipad that can handle weight from the massive helicopters.

UC Health Doctor Paul Reckard said this training can be valuable experience when every second counts.

''The pilots need this opportunity to practice coming in here to get the blackhawks on the pad in case of real emergencies when they need to bring somebody in,' Reckard said.

Piloting Blackhawk helicopters with these missions can be tricky because the helicopter's length can limit visibility. Their weight can also make Blackhawk landings more difficult than landing rescue helicopters.
