Piece of 1888 Colorado Springs infrastructure uncovered

Posted: Updated:

A project for improving the future of Colorado Springs just uncovered a still working piece of infrastructure from the city's earliest days. "It's stamped 1888," said Michael Lovato with Colorado Springs Utilities. He is referring to a massive water main valve dating back nearly 130 years.

This is likely the second valve ever installed in the city. Utilities maps and numbers infrastructure as it is installed. This one was located at one of the original city intersections and labeled number two.

Project managers say it functioned just fine when they used it to shut off water to get this project started.  They think it has survived time and corrosion because the metal is so thick.

Crews who removed it say they can't help but wonder about the workers who installed it.  "That's what's most fascinating about all this is we have the technology and we still run into many challenges s when we're trying to renew something like this," said Lovato, “I could only imagine what the pioneers of our industry went through."
