Tuesday's Child: 30-year foster parents share passion for helping children

COLORADO SPRINGS -

For many foster parents, caring for children in need is a calling. For Patti and Peter Svendsen, it's a passion they've had for 30 years.

"I've always had a passion for working with kids," Patti said. "Helping them and getting them turned around, and getting them back with their families if that's where they're supposed to go to."

The Svendsens have had 153 kids in their home over the years, and an impact on each and every one of them. They say it's difficult work, often full of tears, but rewarding nonetheless. "We typically do medically fragile babies or children, so to see them making strides when we're told it was never going to happen," Patti said. "They're never going to remember us because they leave us really young, but I'll know in my heart that they got a good start and they're heading in the right direction."

They've adopted three children over the years, including a daughter who has defied all odds. "She was only supposed to be with us for four months, because they thought she would not make it much longer than that. We're pretty blessed that she's now 20."

The Svendsens continue to foster in El Paso County, through a private placement agency, with no signs of slowing down.
