Tuesday's Child: El Paso County DHS welcoming new executive director

Posted: Updated:

The El Paso County Department of Human Services is welcoming a new executive director this month. Julie Krow comes from the State Department of Human Services where she served as the Deputy Executive Director. She has been working in El Paso County for a few months, and will take over the department at the end of February.

"During my first three months, I focused on assessing the agency and where we are with our outcomes," Krow said.

In addition to finding more ways to support foster parents, she hopes to expand the department's partnerships with other public and private agencies in our community. First, they'll team up with AspenPointe and Maple Star to help foster families specialize their care.

"So that they can be trained to work with children that have been traumatized," she said. "We're hoping with that project we may be able to avoid placing children with a lot of behavioral health needs into residential or congregate care."

Krow is also working on a new partnership with El Paso County Public Health to better assess families that get referred to them, especially those with young children.

"When the case worker is doing an assessment for child abuse or neglect, a nurse can also be there to determine if  the child has any medical needs, if they're growing appropriately and if they're meeting appropriate developmental milestones," she said.

With the help of county commissioners, the DHS lobby is getting a face lift. Two murals are in place, and they plan to add bookshelves. Parents will be invited to take a book home to read to their children.
