DEA search warrant leads to fatal standoff in Colorado Springs

Posted: Updated:

One man is dead, after a 4-hour long standoff with the Colorado Springs Police Department, starting around 9:45 Thursday morning.

Police say it appears to be a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

The Colorado springs Police Department was assisting the DEA with a search warrant for a home near South 8th St. and Salano Drive, by trying to clear everyone out of the home.

They were able to get one person out right away, but the other man barricaded himself inside.

SWAT was brought onto scene while police spent hours trying to contact him by phone.

"At no time would he pick up the telephone or have any contact with our negotiators on scene," said Lieutenant Howard Black.

"As we continued to clear the house, we found the male on the second level of the house with what appears to be a self inflicted gun shot wound," he added.

Black says the men involved in Thursday's incident had been on their radar.

"This particular incident brought in a full call out of our tactical enforcement."

Right now, police are not offering any details on the suspect in custody, or the man who died of an apparent inflicted gunshot wound.

"All comments about the subjects inside this residence, i will refer back to the PIO of the DEA.  It is in fact their case."

Black did suggest there may be additional people living at this home, besides the two who were there earlier today.

The standoff ended around 2:00 p.m., and the DEA took over the scene--calling it an active investigation.
