Dara Hoffman-Fox is a therapist working with the transgender community. Her book, You and You're Gender Identity: A Guide to Discovery, is being published at a time when the LGBT community has been in the spotlight, both for good, and tragic reasons.
"Complete and total coincidence but I also don't believe in coincidences, that this is the perfect time for this type of book to be released in the midst of all these other things that are going on," said Dara Hoffman-Fox.
Friends and fans joined Hoffman-Fox at Seeds Community Cafe downtown to show support for her book about gender identification.
"Colorado Springs has a huge gay/transgender community that works together and I just think it's a great thing and I hope that the rest of the people that aren't involved in the community can understand what they're going through and understand that they're just like everybody else," said Judy Katz, a close friend of Hoffman-Fox.
Hoffman-Fox was excited by the turnout today, but knows there's a lot more work to be done for a cultural shift to accept the transgender community. The military's lift of the transgender ban that goes into effect July 1st is a big step towards that cultural shift.
"Often times the military has a big voice in that and for them to put this out there and say, this is what we believe is right... I think that sends a huge message to the rest of society and I think it was just such a surprise, i'm so happy that happened," Said Hoffman-Fox.
