Your Healthy Family: Testing for Radon in El Paso County

Posted: Updated:

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, and El Paso County Public Health is offering free radon test kits this month.

Experts say it's important to test your home. Radon is an invisible, odorless, tasteless, radioactive gas; so testing is the only way to know if you're living in an environment with high levels.

"This is a time we're in our homes with the windows closed, doors closed, because it's been cold outside. And that's when if radon is seeping into your home, you have the greatest exposure, because you don't have the windows and doors open," said Tom Gonzales, El Paso County Public Health Deputy Director.

If radon is detected, the next step can range from small inexpensive fixes to more aggressive ones. There are around 400 kits available for El Paso County residents. The kits can be picked up at Hillside Community Center and Meadows Park Community Center. Test kits can also be purchased at most hardware stores.

Another reminder from health officials: even if your neighbors do not have elevated levels of radon, you should still test your own home.
