Fifth-seed Air Force lost to two-seed San Diego State, 8-2, to be eliminated from competition at the 2015 Mountain West Baseball Championship Friday morning at Peccole Park. The Falcons finished the 2015 season with a 23-29 record.
A pair of three-run innings--coming in the third and fifth innings--helped San Diego State build to an 8-0 lead. The Falcons scored two in the ninth.
Aztec starting pitcher Mark Seyler (9-2) tossed seven scoreless innings, scattering three hits while striking out two. San Diego State had 14 hits, with shortstop Danny Sheehan and catcher Seby Zavala hitting home runs.
Air Force had eight hits in the game. Third baseman Noah Pierce and designated hitter Bradley Haslam had two hits on the day. Freshman catcher Travis Wilkie had a a strong day behind the plate, throwing out three baserunners attempting to steal.
Falcon starting pitcher Nick Biancalana (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs in three innings. The freshman righthander struck out three. Freshmen Michael Rieker, Joe Kincart and Tucker Jacobs and senior Ben Yokley closed out the game in relief.
San Diego State plated a run in the second and three in the third to jump ahead 4-0. The Aztecs scored three more in the fifth and one in the eighth.
Haslam and Pierce scored Air Force's runs. Haslam also drove in a run. Sophomore Jacob DeVries also had a pinch-hit RBI-single.
The Falcons had its winningest season since 2002. Air Force also had 22 wins against Div. I opponents, setting a new school record. The Falcons also won their first MW Championship game yesterday in 11 years. Air Force also played three games at the tournament for just the third time ever.
Air Force graduates five seniors off the 2015 team. Seniors Noah Pierce, Tyler Saleck, David Thomas, Dominic Vicino and Ben Yokley comprise the class of 2015.
