PUEBLO -

Bird watchers will flock to Lake Pueblo State Park for Eagle Days, and new raptor poles are bringing many of the bald eagles up close and personal.

The bald eagles are a big winter attraction, so the park teamed up with Black Hills Energy to help them hunt in the form of about ten new raptor poles.

Park manager Monique Mullis says, "Birds of prey are to roost on them and basically just purvey the area, get a good bird's eye view, if you will."

The project is aimed at curbing the growing prairie dog population. The burrowers were creeping towards visitor campgrounds, so Mullis calls the poles a win/win. "We want to make sure the prairie dogs have their area and that it's safe for our visitors," she says, "so we don't want the prairie dogs to be coming in and settling into the campground areas."

The old telephone poles were installed just in time for Eagle Days. Mullis says, "What's better than bald eagles who winter here at Lake Pueblo State Park, at the reservoir every winter, and so it's just kind of a celebration and basically just to celebrate our natural resources."

Most of the Eagle Days activities will take place Saturday, Feb. 7. Friday night Parks and Wildlife is hosting a kickoff event, where an award will be given to the winner of an Eagle Days photo contest.
