A graduate of University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing, Whitaker began his broadcasting career in 1966 with Storer Television as director of sales research at WITI-TV in Milwaukee. He later served as a national sales representative for Storer Television Sales in New York and Chicago. Whitaker was named General Sales Manager of WGHP-TV in High Point, North Carolina in 1974, where he was later promoted to Station Manager. In 1983, Whitaker was named President and General Manager for WJW-TV, the CBS affiliate in Cleveland, Ohio. 1989 found Whitaker in Tampa, Florida as president and general manger of WTVT-TV. Under his direction, the station became one of the top five CBS affiliates in major markets in the country. He left WTVT in 1995 to become vice-president for station development at Argyle Television. In April 1995, he was named President and General Manager for KDFW-TV in Dallas, TX when New World Television acquired the station from Argyle. Whitaker joined the KOAA family in January 1998.
