The Pueblo Zoo has big construction plans, which include adding a new Black Rhino exhibit. The zoo is trying to raise $2.5 million for the project.
The first is to build a new learning center near the entrance which will be as big or bigger than the existing building. The zoo will also build an enclosure for two black rhinos. The exhibit will be built on one acre of land near the lions.
"We decided Black Rhinos might be the best in terms of big animals. Some of the other large animals you're used to seeing in zoos like elephants and giraffes need very specialized staff and housing," said Jonnie McFarland, Director of the Pueblo Zoo.
The zoo has already raised $750,000--half of that money was given to them by the City of Pueblo.
The zoo says both projects could take a few years to complete.
