Zach Thaxton

Zach Thaxton is an Emmy-winning journalist who brings a decade's worth of experience to the News 5 newsroom.

Thaxton began at News 5 in June 2010 and currently serves as weekend co-anchor and a multi-media journalist (MMJ), shooting, writing, and editing his own general assignments news reports.  Zach anchored in 12-hour wall-to-wall on-air shifts during the historic Waldo Canyon Fire in the summer of 2012.  He also was responsible for News 5's exclusive "Truth Check" series on campaign advertising during the 2012 election season.  

Prior to joining News 5, Zach spent more than six years as co-anchor for the morning and midday newscasts at KRDO in Colorado Springs, where he won an Emmy for Best Morning Newscast and numerous Colorado Broadcasters Association and Associated Press awards for his feature reporting.

Thaxton began his career in March 2002, spending 18 months as producer and anchor of the morning newscast at KOBI in Medford, Oregon.

Zach is a Colorado native (Evergreen) who earned a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and Technical Communication from Colorado State University in Fort Collins in December 2001. While at CSU, he anchored newscasts for the campus television station and hosted programs on the campus radio station.  Zach has extended family throughout Southern Colorado, including in Las Animas, Fowler, and Howard.

Falcon school fights to save student's life

FALCON- Aden Knar, a third grade student at Falcon Virtual Academy, is in need of a life-saving bone marrow transplant. His school, Falcon Virtual Academy, will host a bone marrow donor drive tomorrow to help find a match Aden. Knar, 10, was diagnosed at age 4 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and entered remission in 2008. In November 2013, the Knar family learned that the leukemia had returned, and is now isolated in his bone marrow. In an outreach of support, Falcon Virtual Academy hosted a bone marrow donor drive in January, and will be hosting another tomorrow from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at 6113 Constitution Ave., directly west of Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado. "We wanted to reach out to the family again," said Jodi Fletcher, assistant principal. Fletcher explained that more than 250 people participated in the January drive, and she hopes to have similar numbers April 19.
