The Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association's annual marquee musical offering, Symphonie Fantastique, will be performed this Sunday at the Pikes Peak Center.
The Spring Concert features the two top Association ensembles- the Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Pikes Peak Wind Symphony (the "Winds" just returned from concerts at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in N.Y.C.). Also performing are the Encore! Youth Symphony and Bravo! Winds. Music includes the challenging Symphonie Fantastique by Hector Berlioz (Youth Symphony) and Art in the Park by Robert Shelton (Pikes Peak Winds). The winner of the 2010 Young Artist Solo Competition, Shaina Rush, will perform the Concertino for Flute by Cécile Chaminade.
"When the downbeat is given, these ‘kids' put out some of the best musical sounds that can be heard in Southern Colorado. Teenagers climbing the heights Berlioz, Mozart, Rachmaninoff and Holst! The Youth Symphony and the Pikes Peak Winds are truly a community treasure," said Colorado Springs Philharmonic Music Director Lawrence Leighton Smith. Smith introduced special honoree Charles Ansbacher at this past March 14's Celebratory Luncheon at the Antlers Hilton.
"What a fantastic year this has been for us," said Youth Symphony's Founder and Music Director Gary Nicholson. "The Anniversary Celebration has helped to focus the community's attention on then incredible musical talent we have in the area. People who are hearing our musicians fop the first time are amazed at what they are experiencing. Theses kids deserve to be heard. They have received standing ovations form audiences around the world - and all of them live here in southern Colorado!"
