Your Healthy Family: Pet Physical Therapy

Tools like treadmills and techniques like underwater exercise have been staples of physical therapy for humans for some time.

In today's Your Healthy Family, pets are now reaping the benefits as well.

There's a specialized water treadmill being used by veterinarians to help rehabilitate dogs and, believe it or not, even cats.

For some of these pets, even a walk around the block is impossible.

Some of them are recovering from injuries while others need to lose some weight.

Either way, these treadmills are helping them get back on their feet.

"We can adjust the speed," said Dr. Brittany Barton, a veterinarian. "We can even kind of mix it up a bit and put in some exercise balls and do some very specialized exercises."

Pets spend anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes on the treadmill.

Some of them can only reach up to one mile per hour, but doctors say it's better than nothing and shows they're improving.
