Your dentist can spot osteoporosis

Dentists can detect a host of health problems. Add to that list - osteoporosis.

A simple computer program analyzes routine dental X-rays for the bone-thinning disease.

British researchers developed a software program that was able to spot signs of declining bone density in dental X-rays of the lower jaw. The study findings, published in the journal Bone, are based on panoramic dental X-rays, which show the whole jaw. More than 600 European women 45 to 70 were studied.

The U.S. recommends that all women age 65 or older be screened for osteoporosis.  Medicare will pay for an expensive test every two years, called dual energy X-ray absorptiometry.

The findings suggest that routine dental X-rays could provide an inexpensive way to provide screening for osteoporosis.
