ATLANTA (AP) - Eric Young Jr. caught a flight to Atlanta in time to bat leadoff for the New York Mets.
Young arrived at Turner Field shortly before batting practice Wednesday after being acquired late the night before from Colorado. He was immediately put in the Mets lineup as they faced the Braves.
Manager Terry Collins says the Mets need a boost at the top of the order, and he's hopeful that Young can provide it. He was hitting .242 with one homer, six RBIs and eight stolen bases when Colorado designated him for assignment last week.
Young says he was "shocked" to be let go by the Rockies but is excited about joining the Mets. He's a native of New Jersey, so this feels like a bit of a homecoming.
