Young child falls into Steamboat Springs creek

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Steamboat Springs police say a 15-month-old child who fell into Butcherknife Creek has been taken to The Children's Hospital in Denver in critical condition.

The Steamboat Pilot & Today reports the child's grandfather pulled him out of the water Saturday, about 400 feet downstream.

The child's name wasn't released.

Police Capt. Joel Rae says rivers and creeks around Routt County have been swollen as the area's deep snowpack melts, but the flow in Butcherknife Creek was relatively low. He says the creek was about 18 inches deep with an estimated flow of 20 to 25 cubic feet per second.
