A YMCA in southern Colorado is giving free membership to all sixth graders next year, saying it could the first YMCA in the nation offering an entire class of kids membership for free.

The YMCA of Pueblo says that starting in May, all rising sixth-graders in the area can use the gym free of charge. The gym says the estimated 2,500 memberships would normally cost about $650,000, though YMCAs routinely grant scholarships for needy youths.

Terry Lockwood, head of the Pueblo YMCA, says interested kids will sign a code of conduct and pledge to have good school attendance. The YMCA is planning a yearlong program for the kids to include academic support and community-service projects in addition to sports and swimming at the gym.
