The longtime owner of the New York Yankees, George Steinbrenner, has died of a heart attack. He was 80 years old.

Steinbrenner purched the Yankees in 1973. During his tenure the team won seven World Series titles and eleven American League pennants. He relinquished day-to-day operations of the team to his sons three years ago.

Flags were immediately lowered to half-staff at Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees' spring training complex in Florida. Many employees there were in tears.

Steinbrenner's death comes two days after the team's beloved public-address announcer Bob Sheppard died at 99.
