Xcel Energy says some of its customers are being contacted by phone, in an illegal phone scam. The target is senior citizens in particular.
As part of the scam, Xcel says a fake customer service agent is calling customers, saying their monthly payment was received but the check was not signed. Customers are then asked for a credit card number to pay the bill. Investigators say senior citizens are the likely target because they are more likely to pay their bills by check.
Xcel says if you receive this phone call, simply hang up. If you think you may have already become a victim, contact your credit card company and the police immediately.
