AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP) - A Wyoming native has been named the top graduate of the Air Force Academy class of 2011.

The academy board chose Hal Schmidt Jr. of Cody for the award last week. He will graduate on Wednesday with about 1,000 other seniors. Schmidt graduated from Cody High School. He plans to begin a 2-year program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a master's degree in aeronautical and astronautical engineering.

The academy says Schmidt had the top average score in the graduating class for military performance and also maintained a high grade-point average, which wasn't disclosed. He also had the maximum score on athletic and physical fitness tests.

The academy board consists of the school's generals and colonels. The board has final say on who is accepted and who graduates.
