Members of a union representing Colorado workers at Safeway and Kroger Co.'s King Soopers and City Market chains are voting on new contract offers and whether to authorize a strike.

Voting started Saturday for Safeway meat warehouse workers in Denver represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7. Votes by King Soopers, City Market and Safeway workers around the state will follow. The last scheduled day of voting is Oct. 6 for Safeway workers in Montrose. The union and companies say they hope to reach new contracts without a strike.

UFCW Local 7 represents about 17,000 workers at Safeway, King Soopers, City Market and Albertsons whose contracts expired May 9. Albertsons workers are waiting for more negotiations.
