Kayla Kammrad has been in the ICU at Penrose Main Hospital in Colorado Springs with the H1N1 virus since mid-October. The Canon City woman has been listed in critical condition most of that time, and doctors were cautious about her ability to recover.
Now, the 22-year old is talking on her own. She's going through physical therapy to regain the strength she's lost, using a walker to go up and down the hallways at the hospital. The doctors tell her family she could come home in six weeks.
Kayla's Dad, Mike Williams, says the doctor told him in 20 years he had never seen a miracle, until now.
"She just doing fantastic," says Williams.
Kayla has two young boys who haven't seen her since she's been in the hospital. Kayla tells News First 5 she hopes to see them in person this week.
Kayla's husband, Jeff, came back from Iraq to be by her side. The National Guard is making sure he can stay in Colorado to help her recover.
