Woman saves money to host party on National Night Out

Every year, Lila Ray saves her money to host a neighborhood block party on National Night Out.

"I got tired of watching the kids destroy property and doing drugs," she said.

Her motivated to clean up the neighborhood started when she first moved in back in 2005. She says the neighborhood was run-down with crime on just about every street corner.

"I got made one day and said ‘Enough is enough!'"

Ray felt the neighborhood was turning a blind eye, so she decided to do something positive and host a block party. Ray says it is a way for neighbors to meet other neighbors and discuss ways to improve their community and cut back on crime.

From food to a moonwalk for the kids, Lila gets her excitement from seeing the smiles her party brings.

"Lila is a enthusiastic person," Rev. Jimmy Lilley said. "She always wanted to do something good for the community and she found that this party would be an extraordinary thing to do."

Police and the El Paso County Sheriff's Office encourage all neighbors to get together at least once a year to meet other people living in their community.
