It's a disturbing case. A Florence woman was found dismembered. Her boyfriend is now accused of her murder. We are learning more about the suspect, John Paul Williams through a couple that knew him, and the arrest affidavit.
Rebecca Magallanes met a grim end. Her torso was discovered by some hikers last November at a campsite near Wetmore. Custer County Sheriff Fred Jobe says, "Up in our county this is probably one of the more gruesome things we've had."
Magallanes was last seen in November at her job at Saint Thomas More Hospital in Canon City. It wasn't until February that DNA confirmed that torso belonged to her, and the rest of her was missing. Her body parts were apparently sawed off.
Magallanes and Williams lived together in an RV off County Road 95 in Florence. Their landlords were Richard and Holly Kinsey. They say they were a nice couple. Richard Kinsey says, "He was very handy. He did some things around here."
Soon after Magallanes disappeared, Williams told the Kinsey's she left. They say, "He told her Rebecca had left because she had to go back to see her mom. She went on a bus to Arizona."
According to the affidavit, she never took that bus. Williams quickly became a suspect. Police say he was also caught in several lies during their interviews. They also say around the time of her disappearance he bought a saw and acid, and they found some blood in his RV. This evidence finally led to his arrest. Canon City Captain Allen Cooper says, "You don't know why people do things like this. Sometimes these questions are not answered during the course of the investigation."
Several agencies worked together during this investigation. Investigators say it was that teamwork that got an arrest in this case.
Williams is being held without bond in Fremont county. He faces first degree murder charges. At the arraignment on Friday he was wheeled in, in a wheelchair. That's because he had a stroke shortly after Magallanes disappeared.
She leaves behind 4 children, who live in Arizona.
