Wildlife officials kill black bear in Boulder

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Wildlife officials say they shot and killed a black bear that prevented students from leaving a Boulder elementary school.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill tells The Daily Camera the male bear, which weighed between 180 and 200 pounds, was seen near Flatirons Elementary School at about 3 p.m. Friday. Students were prevented from leaving the school until it was determined that the bear had been confined to a tree in a nearby cemetery.

Churchill says the bear, which has posed problems in the past, was killed because it would not head back to the foothills west of town.

Wildlife officials are asking residents to secure their trash so other bears are not attracted to the area.
