Wildlife officers kill bear after run-in in Aspen

A bear that injured a woman sleeping on her deck in Aspen has been killed by state wildlife officers.

The encounter Monday is among a rash of run-ins between bears and people this summer in the mountain resort. The woman told the Colorado Division of Wildlife that the bear bit or scratched her, leaving a puncture wound on her leg. She said she jumped up and the bear left the deck area, but stayed in her yard.

State wildlife officers tranquilized and later euthanized the bear. They say bears aggressive toward people are killed to protect the public.

Wildlife officers estimate that dozens of bears are roaming through Aspen. Some have broken into homes and cars in search of food because the berries they eat ripened late and because people leave garbage and food around.
