Vanilla is still the top ice cream flavor in America, according to the International Dairy Association, but ice cream chains are hoping to boost business by introducing new, more exotic flavors.
Cold Stone Creamery is serving up lemon poppyseed, strawberry basil and peach ice tea this summer. Baskin Robbins is set to sell French toast and Maggie Moos' is featuring buttered popcorn. Gelato chain Paciugo is hoping to beat them all with flavors such as strawberry black pepper, chocolate Chipotle butter pecan and organic caramelized maple bacon.
Ice cream shops ring up 70 percent of their sales in the summer, and stores are hoping these off-beat flavors will lure in customers.
