BOSTON (AP) - Whale watchers are having an unexpected nighttime experience outside Boston after their boat was snagged by a lobster trap rope.
Boston Harbor Cruises passenger Ken Maguire says they expected to be back Monday around 4:30 p.m. but about 10 minutes into the return trip their boat stopped after apparently hitting something.
Coast Guard Petty Officer MyeongHi Clegg says the boat's propeller became entangled in a lobster trap rope about 15 miles offshore. She says plans to transfer the roughly 163 passengers and crew to another vessel didn't pan out. The whale watchers will stay aboard the boat until sometime Tuesday morning.
She says a Coast Guard boat and two cutters will remain alongside the boat overnight.
The boat company hasn't returned a phone message seeking comment.
