We've lost a well known investigator and leader in local law enforcement. Lou Smit passed away Wednesday, after a battle with cancer.

Detective Smit had a distinguished career with the Colorado Springs Police Department, one than spanned some 30 years.

He solved a number of high profile cases locally, including the murder of Heather Dawn Church. He was also called to help with the JonBenet Ramsey case in Boulder.

El Paso County District Attorney Dan May says he was hands down the best investigator he's ever met. "He taught you to care for the victim, taught you to walk in the victims shoes. He carried pictures of the victims with him, that's the type of person he was."

Former El Paso County D.A., Bob Russell said, "I became a great admirer of his..his humbleness..his desire to do well. We worked hand and glove, his death means a lot to me, personally not just professionally".

May says he still has a notebook Smit gave him 25 years ago with tips on how to solve cases.
Smit passed away while under the care of local hospice.
