The phones at the Pikes Peak Chapter of the American Red Cross are not working. However, the agency says it is still accepting donations for disaster relief in Haiti both in person and online.
Jaici Murcia, the director of volunteer and emergency services, says the phone system failure is not the result of high call volume.
"We've actually been having a couple of problems over the last week that our phone company has coming in and dealing with for us, so it just happened now that our phones went dead and our internet went with it," Murcia said.
A disaster relief donation center has been set up in the lobby of the chapter's offices in at 1040 S. 8th Street in Colorado Springs. Murcia says that donations can also be made online at the chapter's web site pparc.org.
Donations can also be made via text message by sending the message "Haiti" to 90999. As of Thursday more than $5 million had been donated to the Red Cross for Haiti by American cell phone users.
Murcia says people in the Pikes Peak region alone have donated over $30,000 through their offices.
